Relationship progression wasn't really believable. The 4 star rating is because some of the lines do not connect fully and they are thin, making the use of anything but pencils difficult to stay within the lines. It is the story of betrayal, revenge, mistakes, overreaching, intense rivalries, and lust for power, as well as family, friendship, iron purpose, and great courage. This book is a collection of his letters and reports to the Russian Academy of Art. The climax to the entire QUEEN OF PLAGUES saga is here. This is one of my favorite books, the type of book I can't put down. The back-and-forth of the story kept me so interested that I finished the book latter half in 2 train rides and lunch breaks. While many readers will not agree with the protagonist's solution, they will understand why he was driven to break the laws he was sworn to uphold. Don't miss the Christmas tree shopping episode. I often prefer to listen to practitioners rather than pundits, and in KM this is especially important because good theory is still developing. This is not to say that GP is a mere updating of TPP.
